Welterweights

Georges St. Pierre

Streak: 4 wins
Record: 17-2
Previous Ranking: N/A
Big Wins: Hughes, Serra, Penn, Sherk, Koscheck, Parisyan

The Canadian One is quickly making a case to be the greatest welterweight of all time. Georges has been unbeatable since dropping his belt to Serra - at no point in either recent fight (Serra II, Hughes III) did I believe Hughes was in trouble. His wrestling is better than collegiate wrestlers, his striking is as varied as it gets, and his will to win is among the greats. It will take a ton to beat GSP.

Josh Koscheck

Streak: 2 wins
Record: 13-2
Previous Ranking: N/A
Big Wins: Sanchez

Despite losing to Georges St. Pierre, which in and of itself is no huge defeat, Kos has been fantastic in the UFC. His top-notch collegiate wrestling background assisted his giving Diego Sanchez a first professional loss. Koscheck possesses one of the better chins in the game, never having been knocked out.

Jon Fitch

Streak: 1 loss
Record: 19-3
Previous Ranking: N/A
Big Wins: Sanchez, Alves, Carter

A previously lesser known talent, Fitch has quietly made his ascent winning fifteen straight fights, including a perfect run in the UFC. He hasn't been fighting fluff though; his streak includes a knockout of other top ranked welterweight Thiago Alves. Fitch's versatility on the ground and standing up earned him a title shot with Georges St. Pierre.

Thiago Alves

Streak: 6 wins
Record: 16-3
Previous Ranking: N/A
Big Wins: Hughes, Parisyan

The Pitbull shocked the world with a KO of Matt Hughes, but no one should have been that surprised. Alves had been 7-2 up until that point in the UFC and was just coming off a TKO of Karo Parisyan, a man who had previously never been knocked out. Alves' conditioning and killer instinct are among the best in the game and he should be in line for a title shot after Fitch.

Diego Sanchez

Streak: 2 wins
Record: 19-2
Previous Ranking: N/A
Big Wins: Parisyan, Diaz, Florian

After wins against Diaz and Parisyan, Sanchez was quickly hailed as the next big thing in the welterweight division. However, consecutive losses to Koscheck and Fitch took Sanchez down a notch. He got back on the right track with a win against David Bielkheden, but he'll need to get back into the upper echelon of competition if he wishes to move up in ranks.

Jake Shields

Streak: 10 wins
Record: 21-4-1
Previous Ranking: N/A
Big Wins: Okami, Condit

Shields is a veteran of just about every organization out there, except the UFC. That hurts him in these rankings. Like many of the other welterweights, Shields is a top wrestler, but his questionable strength of schedule in the last year keeps him out of the top 5.

Carlos Condit

Streak: 8 wins
Record: 23-4
Previous Ranking: N/A
Big Wins: Trigg

Condit suffers from a weak strength of schedule, but to an even greater degree than Shields. However, it's tough to deny him his place among the rankings: he's won seven straight and hasn't lost in two years.

Matt Hughes

Streak: 2 losses
Record: 42-7
Previous Ranking: N/A
Big Wins: St. Pierre, Penn, Gracie, Sherk, Newton, Sakurai

Where to start with Hughes? On one hand, he's probably the best welterweight of all time. On the other hand, he's lost three of four fights to all top opponents. His wrestling prowess and industry-best experience make him a constant threat at 170.

Matt Serra

Streak: 1 loss
Record: 9-5
Previous Ranking: N/A
Big Wins: St. Pierre, Curran

Just 6-5 in the UFC, Serra gained a too-high placement following his win over GSP. A subsequent loss, albeit a year later, sent him back down to his rightful place near the bottom of the pack. His losses to top competition and wins against subpar opponents ensure that Serra won't move far above this spot.

Mike Swick

Streak:2 wins
Record: 12-2
Previous Ranking: N/A
Big Wins: Davis

Swick's one of the most consistent fighters in the UFC, having suffered just one loss in the organization. He looked great against a decision victory over Marcus Davis.

11. Nick Diaz Streak: 2 wins
13. Karo Parisyan Streak: 1 loss
11. Nick Thompson Streak: 12 wins
14. Marcus Davis Streak: 1 loss
15. Hayato Sakurai Streak: 1 loss
16. Drew Fickett
17. Yoshiyuki Yoshida
18. Dustin Hazelett
19. Akihiro Gono
20. Anthony Johnson
21. Hiromitsu Miura
22. Rory Markham
23. Chris Wilson
24. Jonathan Goulet
25. David Baron
26. Chris Lytle
27. Mike Pyle
28. Paul Kelly
29. Brad Blackburn
30. Kevin Burns
31. Jay Hieron
32. Brock Larson
33. Tamdan McCrory

 MMA Madness' Rules of Rankings

1.) For a fighter to be ranked, he must have:
* fought within the last two years

2.) For a fighter to be ranked in a new division, he must have:
* declared his intention to move divisions (ex: Dan Henderson)
* fought two consecutive fights at the new weight (ex: Hayato Sakurai)

3.) A fighter shall not be ranked at two weights
* He is ranked at the old weight until one of the two examples under #2 occurs

4.) Rankings will not rely on transitive properties
* ex: Alves beat Hughes, Hughes beat GSP, thus Alves beat GSP is not acceptable logic

5.) Rankings are based on a full body of work & strength of schedule, not just the last fight
* ex: Michael Bisping has just two wins at MW, but his resume includes a win on The Ultimate Fighter and a win over Matt Hamill (full body)
* ex: Matt Hughes has lost two of three (as of 6/08), however, that slump would not drop him as far as a younger fighter who lost two of three (full body)
* ex: Additionally, Hughes' losses have been to top competitors, so losses to GSP and Alves don't hurt as much as another fighters loss to Mike Swick (strength of schedule)
